TANZA, Cavite — A large, vividly colored mural celebrating Filipino warrior heritage and evoking the country’s ongoing territorial struggles has drawn attention and debate in Barangay Biga, where it was completed earlier this month on a subdivision wall along Tanza-Trece Road.

Titled “Ang Bagani ng Arkipelagong Kayumanggi,” the 36-square-meter artwork was finished on April 5 using latex and spray paint on a wall at Landmass Park Subdivision. It was created by Sining Kamalayan Cultural Artist Collective, or SKA, an artist group whose stated mission is to reawaken a sense of heroism and national consciousness in contemporary Filipino society.

The mural centers on the figure of the Bagani, pre-colonial Filipino warriors known for their valor, loyalty, and love of community. It traces the country’s successive struggles against colonial powers — Spain, the United States, and Japan — while drawing a direct line to what the artists describe as present-day threats, including what they characterized as ongoing encroachment on Philippine territory in the West Philippine Sea.

The artwork also carries a pointed warning against collaboration with foreign powers, depicting certain Bagani figures as having been deceived into siding with outsiders for personal gain — imagery that resonates with current debates over national sovereignty and political allegiance.

“Now is the time to take a stand. We are the new Bagani of our generation,” reads the message embedded in the mural.

The work has drawn a range of reactions from residents and passersby, with some praising both its artistic quality and its forthright political message, while others have been prompted to reflect on its bold commentary on present-day national issues.

SKA said the mural is intended not as mere decoration but as a call for unity, patriotism, and the defense of Philippine sovereignty.
