A Catholic priest has launched a book exploring whether COVID-19 can be understood as the will of God, a work a local archbishop said offers comfort amid suffering without attributing evil to the divine.

Father Ramon Echica’s “Was COVID-19 the Will of God?” was unveiled during a ceremony at the Martin Family of Lisieux Chapel of San Carlos Seminary College. Attendees included Cebu Archbishop Alberto “Abet” Uy, Archbishop Emeritus Jose Palma, seminary formators and visiting clergy.

In remarks at the event, Uy emphasized that God does not cause evil but instead enters into human suffering. “He is the one who enters into our suffering, walks with us, and brings good even out of the darkest moments,” the archbishop said.

Uy described Echica’s book as an invitation to reflection, prayer and a renewed encounter with God, particularly during times of crisis. He said the work helps readers find meaning, strengthen their faith and see God not as distant but as Emmanuel — “God with us.”

Echica is a theology professor at Seminario Mayor de San Carlos. He holds a licentiate and doctorate in theology from the Catholic University of Leuven and a master’s degree from Ateneo de Manila University.

His first book, “Jesus for Filipinos,” received the Cardinal Sin Book Award in the area of spirituality.
