SUSPECT ARRESTED IN SERIES OF SILANG PUBLIC MARKET THEFTS
SILANG, Cavite — Police arrested a man suspected of carrying out a series of thefts inside the Silang Public Market, authorities said.
Vendors said they had been monitoring the suspect for some time after noticing he resembled a man captured on CCTV footage during earlier theft incidents. Investigators found that in several cases, security cameras in parts of the market had been disabled before the thefts occurred.
Suspicion against the man grew after the child of one of the victims positively identified him, saying he was the one who took a speaker and charger from their store in a previous incident.
When vendors spotted the suspect returning to the market, they kept watch on him. He allegedly attempted to flee but was quickly caught and arrested by SG. Daygo and SG. Alimatar before being turned over to the custody of the Silang Police Station.
During questioning, the suspect admitted involvement in the thefts, police said. He told investigators he committed the crimes because he needed money to buy medicine.
Authorities are also investigating several car and motorcycle keys recovered from his bag. The suspect insisted he had purchased the keys, but police said they are still verifying his statement.
Authorities renewed their call for shoppers and vendors to remain vigilant and avoid leaving personal belongings and merchandise unattended to prevent similar incidents.
