TRECE MARTIRES CITY, Cavite — The family of an 8-year-old boy is seeking justice after he died a day after his teacher allegedly gave him deworming medication at school, they said.
Rex Mission, a Grade 4 student at Hugo Perez Elementary School Annex, died July 3, one day after the alleged incident, according to his mother.
The mother said her son’s class adviser administered the medication July 2 as part of a school deworming program. While the family had signed a waiver for the program, the mother said she found it unusual that the teacher personally gave the medication to the child, noting that in previous years parents had administered such medication themselves.
According to the mother, Rex complained of severe headache and stomach pain and vomited repeatedly upon returning home. When asked what happened, the boy said his teacher had given him deworming medication at school.
His condition worsened over the following hours, with a rising fever and nosebleeds, the mother said. He died the next day.
The family said they were devastated by the sudden death, describing Rex as healthy, active and fond of dancing and basketball, with no indication the situation would turn fatal.
The mother alleged the teacher was aware her son had an existing health condition but proceeded to administer the medication regardless.
The family has appealed to National Bureau of Investigation Director Melvin Matibag and Public Attorney’s Office Chief Persida Rueda-Acosta to have the boy’s remains undergo an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death and hold accountable anyone found responsible.
Authorities have not yet released findings from their investigation, and the exact cause of Rex’s death remains under investigation.
