CAVITE CITY — A ship ran aground in shallow waters off Cavite City on Sunday, damaging structures used by local mussel farmers and disrupting the livelihood of communities dependent on the coastal waters.

The incident occurred at around 9 a.m. on Aug. 23, when strong winds associated with the southwest monsoon, locally known as habagat, were affecting the area, according to residents.

At least 10 tahungan structures and fish cages were reportedly damaged after the vessel moved into the shallow portion of the coastal waters. A tahungan is a traditional mussel-farming structure where mussels are cultivated in the sea.

Residents said the strong winds and rough conditions contributed to the incident, although the circumstances surrounding why the vessel entered the shallow waters had not been fully established.

Photographs showed the grounded vessel near the coastal area, with damaged aquaculture structures and fish cages in its vicinity.

The affected structures are part of the livelihood infrastructure used by local fisherfolk and mussel growers in Cavite City. Damage to these facilities could affect ongoing mussel cultivation and fishing activities, particularly if the structures and their stocks need to be repaired or replaced.

The incident occurred as the southwest monsoon continued to bring strong winds and unsettled weather over parts of Luzon. Philippine Star reported that the vessel grounding affected the local tahungan community.

As of Sunday, further details about the identity of the vessel, its operator, crew, cargo, destination and the extent of damage to the ship were not immediately available in the reports reviewed.

It was also not immediately clear whether anyone was injured, whether the vessel sustained significant damage, or whether authorities had begun an operation to refloat or remove it from the shallow waters.

Authorities are expected to assess the incident and determine the circumstances that led to the grounding, as well as document the damage to the aquaculture facilities.

The incident highlights the vulnerability of Cavite City’s coastal livelihood communities to maritime accidents and severe weather. For families relying on mussel farming and fishing, damage to tahungan structures can mean not only immediate repair costs but also potential losses from disrupted production.
