CATARMAN, Northern Samar — The National Committee on Geological Sciences has officially declared the rock formations of Biri Island in Northern Samar a National Geological Monument of the Philippines, recognizing the site’s exceptional natural beauty and scientific significance.
The declaration, made on June 4, 2025, covers the Biri Rocks, a series of striking coastal formations spread across seven small islets: Magsapad, Makadlaw, Puhunan, Bel-at, Caranas, Inanahawan, and Magasang.
The National Museum of the Philippines said the formations are composed of sandstone and conglomerates containing analcime, a mineral considered extremely rare in the country.
The designation aims to protect and promote the geological heritage of the site, which has long drawn visitors for its dramatic coastal landscapes.
Tourists planning to visit are advised to travel between March and June, during the dry season, when calmer seas make it easier to explore the island and view the formations up close.
