CAVITE CITY — Students from San Sebastian College – Recoletos de Cavite have launched a grassroots campaign encouraging fellow students to add P2 to their jeepney fare as a voluntary act of solidarity with drivers struggling with rising costs.

The initiative, dubbed “Dos Pesos na Bayanihan,” grew out of an observation by a student who noticed that many of her schoolmates were already leaving their change behind or giving more than the standard fare during their daily commutes.

“We’ve noticed many students not taking their change anymore, and sometimes giving as much as P20,” a jeepney driver said.

Student organizers said that if all 1,500 college students of SSC-R Cavite added P2 to each ride on school days, the campaign could generate as much as P96,000 a month for jeepney drivers in Cavite City.

Student leaders said the campaign aims to turn a small, everyday gesture into a concrete expression of bayanihan — the Filipino tradition of communal support — while keeping participation entirely voluntary.

“This is not just about money. It is about standing in solidarity with the daily struggles of drivers,” student supporters of the campaign said.

Some netizens, while supportive of the initiative, noted that keeping the contribution voluntary was essential to preserving the spirit of genuine bayanihan.

The campaign has sparked discussion both on campus and in online communities, with some observers saying it could serve as a model for student-led social support programs in other schools.
