DILG eyes regional overhaul; Cavite, Palawan may be grouped together

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has proposed changes to the country’s regional structure, including CALABARZON and MIMAROPA, by realigning provinces based on location, accessibility and administrative ties.

Under the proposed setup, provinces could be divided into separate command centers to make government service delivery and coordination faster and more responsive.

Under the proposal, Cavite and Palawan would be grouped into one command center, while Batangas and Mindoro would form another. Laguna and Rizal would also be combined, while Quezon, Marinduque and Romblon would be grouped together — a cluster that could be called “Quemaro.”

DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla said the realignment aims to make governance more practical, particularly in terms of accessibility, coordination and the speed with which government agencies respond to the needs of each province.

If implemented, the proposal could significantly affect administrative coordination and the delivery of government services in Southern Luzon and nearby island provinces.

The plan has raised questions about whether the new setup would improve efficiency or complicate governance further, given the distance between provinces such as Cavite and Palawan.

The proposal is not yet final and remains subject to further study and revision.
