LAIYA, San Juan, Batangas — Nearly 2,000 residents and business owners in Laiya, San Juan, Batangas, are urging Meralco to take over electric service in their area, saying unreliable power from BATELEC II is hurting tourism, commerce and daily life.

The beach destination relies on stable electricity for resorts, restaurants, shops and transport services. But residents say frequent outages and unstable voltage have become recurring problems.

In a petition filed with BATELEC II, the community cited prolonged and often unannounced brownouts, poor customer service, inadequate maintenance and concerns about the cooperative’s ability to meet rising demand. They said the disruptions have hurt work and schooling, damaged appliances and weakened public safety.

A recent survey by Capstone Intel found that 93% of BATELEC II consumers experience multiple power interruptions, with outages lasting one to three hours.

Residents say reliable electricity is essential to sustaining economic activity, attracting more visitors and unlocking the tourism area’s full potential.
