TRECE MARTIRES CITY, Cavite — Police arrested four suspected members of the so-called “Termite Gang,” including its leader, who are blamed for a series of bank and pawnshop robberies in Cavite province, during a raid on their hideout along the bypass road in this city.
The Police Regional Office 4A’s Regional Intelligence Division located the group’s hideout after about two months of surveillance, according to a report.
Acting on information, the division launched an operation with other police units and raided the hideout. Officers carried a warrant of arrest for robbery against the group’s leader.
Police seized four firearms, ammunition, two grenades and digging tools from the suspects.
Police Col. Vic Cabatingan, chief of the Regional Intelligence Division 4A, said the suspects are all former miners, which gave them extensive knowledge of digging tunnels.
The group is believed to have broken into several establishments in Calabarzon and Manila and was preparing to hit targets in Cavite, Cabatingan said. Convenience stores and a Korean House were reportedly set to be targeted in Dasmariñas, Silang, General Mariano Alvarez and Carmona.
The arrests foiled the group’s suspected plan to rob establishments in the province, police said.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the group’s possible links to other crimes.
