DMW RESCUES 55 OFW APPLICANTS FROM SUBSTANDARD HOUSING IN IMUS CITY

IMUS CITY, Cavite — The Department of Migrant Workers rescued 55 overseas Filipino worker applicants from cramped and substandard accommodations operated by licensed recruitment agencies in this city, officials said Friday.

Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac led the June 6 operation after receiving reports of inhumane living conditions at facilities used to house OFW applicants awaiting deployment abroad.

Inspectors found the accommodations failed to meet basic health, safety, and welfare standards, with overcrowded sleeping quarters and other deficiencies that posed risks to the applicants.

The 55 rescued applicants received welfare assistance and temporary shelter through the DMW and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration. Legal assistance and other support services from the Migrant Workers Protection Bureau were also made available.

Cacdac ordered the filing of charges against the recruitment agencies responsible for the substandard facilities.

The DMW said the operation was part of the government’s intensified campaign against abusive practices in the overseas employment sector and that inspections of accommodation facilities across the country are ongoing.
