MMDA Re-Marks West Valley Fault, Highlights Earthquake Risk to Metro Manila and Cavite

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has repainted directional markers for the West Valley Fault along A. Bonifacio Avenue in Barangay Barangka, Marikina, reiterating the persistent earthquake threat to the capital region and surrounding areas.

The markers, first installed a decade ago under former MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino in partnership with the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), are part of a public awareness campaign.

The project aims to identify areas directly traversed by the active 100-kilometer fault line.

Seismologists warn that a movement of the West Valley Fault could trigger a magnitude 7.2 or greater earthquake, referred to as “The Big One.”

Such an event would cause catastrophic damage not only throughout Metro Manila but also in nearby provinces.

Cavite is among the areas identified to experience horrible ground shaking and potential liquefaction, a phenomenon where saturated soil loses strength during an earthquake, due to its proximity to the fault system and its geological composition.
