A Filipino healthcare assistant from Cavite, Philippines has gained recognition in Canada for her dedication to caring for elderly patients with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Corazon Antonio David, 57, originally from Rosario, Cavite, recently completed her studies at the Career Research and Development School of Health Care in Mississauga, Ontario.

David works in a palliative care unit, where she tends to patients who often struggle to recognize themselves or their family members.

“The families of our patients trust us deeply. They often prefer Filipino caregivers,” David told media. She added that families frequently express gratitude when they see Filipino staff caring for their relatives.

David, who immigrated to Canada with the help of her daughter, an anti-money laundering investigator at Scotiabank, previously worked at the Rosario municipal office in Cavite.

Canadian nationals have praised David’s work ethic and patience in her role as a Personal Support Worker. Her story highlights the contributions of Filipino immigrants to Canada’s healthcare sector, particularly in elderly care.

David noted the importance of maintaining Filipino values of compassion and dedication to work, noting that these qualities are highly appreciated by employers in Canada.

“Caring for elderly patients with dementia is challenging, but our Filipino trait of loving the elderly is in our hearts,” David said, adding that healthcare workers must maintain emotional control in difficult situations.

David’s experience showcases the resilience and adaptability of Filipino immigrants in Canada’s workforce, while also highlighting the strong ties to their home province of Cavite.
