The Department of Agriculture (DA) has expanded its subsidized rice program to new sites in Laguna and Cavite provinces, part of a nationwide effort to support vulnerable households.

The program, which offers rice at 29 pesos per kilogram, is now available at KADIWA markets in San Pedro, Laguna and Bacoor, Cavite. These additions aim to fulfill President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s vision of broader access to affordable staples.

“We’re progressing ahead of schedule but with careful planning,” said DA Assistant Secretary Genevieve Guevarra. She noted strong demand from low-income groups, seniors, disabled individuals, and single parents in the new locations.

The expansion comes as other local governments request similar programs. However, Guevarra emphasized a measured approach to ensure success and maximize impact.

“We want to extend benefits to the most vulnerable Filipino households,” Guevarra said, indicating plans for further growth.

The subsidized rice initiative, known as the P29 rice program, is part of the government’s efforts to address food security and inflation concerns. It operates through KADIWA, a market system that connects farmers directly with consumers.

As the program expands, officials are balancing rapid deployment with sustainable implementation. The DA aims to reach more regions while maintaining supply chain efficiency and program integrity.

The government has not specified a timeline for complete nationwide coverage.
