NAIC, Cavite — Mayor Rommel Magbitang has blocked a P300 million National Housing Authority project, saying no new housing will be built until existing resettlement areas have adequate facilities.

The Department of Public Works and Highways had planned the multipurpose building project for new housing in Naic, according to reports from January. Magbitang confirmed in a Facebook Live broadcast that the NHA had pre-approved land for the project.

But the mayor said he would not permit construction until current housing developments receive needed infrastructure.

Many resettlement areas in Naic lack basic facilities including basketball courts, health centers, daycare centers and schools, Magbitang said. He stressed that existing projects must be properly maintained before residents are relocated to new sites.

The mayor said implementation of new housing could be delayed significantly due to the number of issues requiring resolution in current communities.

Magbitang made the announcement during a Feb. 1 rice distribution event at Bronze Ville in Barangay Halang, a resettlement site for informal settlers from Metro Manila. The distribution was part of his weekly “Yorme’s Rice Program.”

The NHA could not immediately be reached for comment.
