SILANG, Cavite — A van driver in Cavite drew heavy criticism after being confronted by a motorist for using an illegal siren, or “wang-wang,” in traffic, according to a viral video uploaded on TikTok.

The incident, posted by “Road Audit PH,” showed a heated exchange between the motorist and the driver of a Toyota Hiace Grandia.

When asked if he was a police officer, the van driver denied it but insisted he was carrying a “VIP.”

The motorist rejected the explanation, pointing out that sirens are banned for private use under Philippine law unless authorized for emergency and law enforcement vehicles.

The video quickly spread online, generating thousands of reactions and comments, many of which demanded stricter enforcement against unauthorized use of sirens.

The “wang-wang” issue has long been a symbol of privilege on Philippine roads.

In 2010, then-President Benigno Aquino III made headlines for banning their use in government convoys to promote discipline and equality in traffic.

Despite the ban, motorists continue to report instances of sirens being used to bypass congestion.

As of Monday, authorities have not released a statement on the incident, but road safety advocates said the video bares the need for tougher penalties and consistent enforcement of the anti-“wang-wang” policy.
