Street Vendors Removed From Silang Public Market; Displaced Sellers Plead for Immediate Relocation

SILANG, Cavite — Street vendors around the Silang Public Market were removed in the last week of July, as local authorities began implementing a long-standing cleanup and orderliness campaign in the area.

The move, earlier flagged by the local government as part of the public market reorganization program, has drawn emotional reactions from displaced vendors, many of whom say they have nowhere else to go.

“It’s hard to accept. Everything we invested in—our carts, roofs, equipment—worth nearly P300,000 from loans, will just be demolished without any relocation plan,” said one vendor tearfully. “We have families. This is our only source of income. At the very least, they could have helped us find a new spot.”

Vendors claimed they were told to wait at least six months before a new area might become available. “Even one day without sales already hurts. How can we survive six months?” the vendor added.

They are appealing to Mayor Gen. Ted Carranza to hear their concerns. “We are working honestly. We only ask for fairness. Where is the compassion from those who made this decision to remove us so suddenly?” another vendor said.

The local government of Silang has yet to announce a specific relocation site or timeline. While authorities push ahead with enforcement of the market ordinance, affected vendors are urging officials to provide temporary spaces so they can continue earning a livelihood.
