A woman who allegedly duped online buyers of frozen meat products was arrested by the Quezon City District Anti-Cybercrime Team (QCDACT) in an entrapment operation in Cavite City on Wednesday.
The suspect was identified as Romelyn Lobaton, who used the alias Maria Cortiz on social media platforms.
She offered various kinds of meat at low prices and claimed to deliver them to the customers’ doorstep.
One of her victims was a man from Quezon City who ordered 27 kilograms of beef and 15 kilograms of chicken worth P12,173 on February 5.
He paid the amount through online banking and received a photo of the meat products supposedly ready for delivery.
However, when he tried to follow up on his order, he found out that he was blocked by the seller on the chat app.
He then reported the incident to the QCDACT, who traced the suspect’s location and set up a sting operation.
The QCDACT operatives posed as interested buyers and ordered P6,000 worth of meat from Lobaton.
They arranged to pay her through a money remittance service store in Cavite City, where she was apprehended by the police.
Lobaton will face charges of swindling/estafa in violation of the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, according to the QCDACT.
