GENERAL MARIANO ALVAREZ, Cavite — Mayor Ed Custodio is pushing a proposal to provide transparent bags to about 27,000 students from Grade 2 through senior high school in public schools here, aiming to strengthen campus security by making it easier to inspect bag contents.
The proposal comes amid heightened concern over school safety in the Philippines following a shooting at Ateneo de Zamboanga University’s Junior High School on Aug. 18, 2026 that killed two students, including the student gunman, and injured several others. That attack came less than two months after a shooting at a public high school in Tacloban City in June that killed three students and wounded about 20 others.
The back-to-back incidents have prompted calls from national officials, including Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., for a review of school security policies covering both public and private schools.
Custodio said the transparent bag measure is intended to help maintain a safe learning environment for students and school personnel in GMA’s public schools.
