SILANG, Cavite — Pineapple farmers in Silang are learning how to turn agricultural waste into economic opportunities through a training on pineapple leaf fiber (PALF) extraction led by the Department of Science and Technology-CALABARZON (DOST-CALABARZON).
The program, conducted in Barangay Cabangaan by the DOST’s Provincial Science and Technology Office-Cavite in partnership with the Philippine Textile Research Institute and the office of Cavite 2nd District Rep. Lani Mercado Revilla, trained at least 50 members of the Pineapple Growers Association.
Participants were taught sustainable fiber extraction techniques, as well as potential market applications of pineapple leaf fiber for textiles and handicrafts.
The training also highlighted eco-friendly business opportunities that could help diversify farmers’ income.
Cabangaan is known for its pineapple industry, but while the fruit is widely marketed, the leaves are usually discarded.
Organizers said the training promotes circular economy practices by turning waste into raw materials for innovation and livelihoods.
