KAWIT, Cavite — Wholesale retailer Makro is returning to the Philippines with a new store planned for Evo City in Kawit, Cavite, as part of a four-location expansion developed in partnership with Ayala Land Inc.
Makro Philippines, a joint venture between Ayala Corp. and Thailand’s CP Axtra Public Co. Ltd., signed land lease agreements with Ayala Land for stores in four of the developer’s mixed-use estates: Evo City in Kawit, Cavite; Cloverleaf in Balintawak, Quezon City; Broadfield in Biñan, Laguna; and Arca South in Taguig City, the companies said.
The Cavite location is expected to extend Makro’s footprint into a rapidly urbanizing corridor south of Metro Manila. Ayala Land will retain ownership of the Evo City property, with Makro developing and operating the store under the terms of the lease agreement.
The four sites give Makro access to established and growing markets across Metro Manila and Southern Luzon, according to the companies. Cloverleaf and Arca South are expected to open first, with the remaining stores, including the Cavite branch, targeted to launch between the fourth quarter of 2026 and the first quarter of 2027, according to a report.
Makro previously operated in the Philippines through a joint venture involving Dutch firm SHV, Ayala and the SM Group, entering the market in March 1996. Ayala sold its stake in 2004, and SM took full control in 2009 and converted the Makro stores into SM Hypermarkets.
Under the new venture, Makro stores will offer fresh and dry groceries, imported goods and nonfood essentials through both physical outlets and an e-commerce platform, the companies said.
