President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has directed the Energy Regulatory Commission to examine implementing a three-month moratorium on electricity disconnections in areas devastated by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine.
The proposed moratorium would halt power disconnections and payment collections from October through December 2024 in regions declared under a State of Calamity due to the storm.
Cavite province has been placed under state of calamity upon the onslaught of typhoon Kristine.
The directive includes provisions for flexible payment arrangements to help affected communities manage their financial obligations while recovering from storm.
The order provides relief to residents and businesses in storm-hit areas as they work to rebuild.
If implemented, the measure would offer temporary protection against service interruptions while communities focus on recovery efforts.
The ERC, which oversees the Philippines’ energy sector, will study the feasibility and implementation framework of the proposed moratorium before making recommendations.
