INDANG, Cavite — Coffee enthusiasts in the CALABARZON region will have a unique opportunity to explore locally grown beans at an upcoming event focused on elevating Calabarzon coffee.

The “Elevating the Flavors of Calabarzon Coffee” event, featuring public cupping and open brewing sessions, is scheduled for Oct. 23, 2024, at Cavite State University. The day-long program aims to showcase the region’s coffee varieties and production methods.

Organizers have limited attendance to 25 participants for the hands-on activities, which include lectures on Philippine coffee and brewing fundamentals, as well as demonstrations of pour-over and AeroPress brewing techniques.

Dr. Miriam D. Baltazar, director of the CvSU Research Center, will lead discussions on local coffee research.

Other speakers include Dr. Koo Chul Jung, winner of a 2024 coffee quality competition, and John Eric Enopia, the 2024 Philippine AeroPress champion.

The event highlights “Kape sa Timog,” or “Coffee from the South,” emphasizing CALABARZON’s distinct coffee heritage. Organizers aim to support local producers and showcase the region’s unique flavor profiles.

“It’s about time that we brew the coffee of our own,” said event coordinator Jon Nazareno, owner of Barista Loft and a certified coffee trainer.

Participants will sample winning entries from the 2024 Calabarzon Coffee Quality Competition, experiencing firsthand the characteristics of locally grown Robusta and Liberica/Excelsa varieties.

Those interested can register online through a provided link. The event is a collaboration between Cavite State University Research Center and Barista Loft.
