MARAGONDON, Cavite — Power Solar, a subsidiary of Prime Infrastructure, inaugurated a 64-megawatt solar power plant in Maragondon, Cavite on Thursday, marking a significant step in the Philippines’ transition to renewable energy.
The facility, capable of powering approximately 84,000 homes, is expected to offset 100,000 tons of coal usage, contributing to environmental conservation efforts.
Prime Infrastructure President and CEO Guillaume Lucci emphasized the plant’s role in the company’s sustainable strategy. “This plant aligns with our purpose of building better lives and resilient economies through critical infrastructure,” Lucci said.
The Maragondon project is part of Prime Solar’s 128-MW pilot initiative, whichtyTanauan, Batangas in April 2023.
Prime Solar has secured a 20-year power supply agreement with Manila Electric Company (Meralco) for 50 MW of the plant’s capacity. This aligns with the Department of Energy’s mandate for distribution utilities to source 2.52% of their energy requirements from renewable sources.
Lucci reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting the government’s clean energy transition. “We will proactively explore opportunities within the renewable space while capitalizing on innovative solutions to achieve energy security, dependability and affordability,” he added.
The launch of this solar plant underscores the growing importance of renewable energy in the Philippines’ power sector, as the country seeks to reduce its carbon footprint and enhance energy security.
