Makro Set to Return to Cavite After Nearly Two Decades
Wholesale giant Makro is planning a comeback in Cavite, with a new store set to open in Evo City, Kawit nearly 20 years after its Philippine operations were folded into the SM retail network.
Makro first entered the Philippines in 1996. Its former Imus branch along Aguinaldo Highway was among the outlets converted into SM Hypermarket stores in 2009, following the SM Group’s acquisition of the chain.
The brand is now being revived through a joint venture between Ayala Corp. and Thailand-listed CP Axtra, operator of the Makro and Lotus’s wholesale and retail brands.
The two companies agreed in 2025 to relaunch Makro in the Philippines, reviving its warehouse-style wholesale model through physical stores and online channels catering to both households and businesses.
As part of the rollout, Ayala Land Inc. has signed long-term lease agreements with Makro Philippines for stores in four Ayala mixed-use developments in Luzon: Cloverleaf in Quezon City, Broadfield in Biñan, Laguna, Arca South in Taguig, and Evo City in Kawit, Cavite.
The planned Evo City branch will mark Makro’s return to the province, adding the familiar wholesale format to the estate’s growing commercial lineup.
