DASMARIÑAS CITY, Cavite — A police officer was killed after being shot by one of four drug suspects, including the group’s alleged leader who was arrested, during an anti-drug operation in Barangay San Esteban here Monday night, police said.
The slain officer was identified as Police Cpl. Anthony John Martinez, assigned to the Regional Drug Enforcement Unit (RDEU)-4A, who was declared dead at the scene.
The alleged drug group leader, identified as Jeffrey Alejos, alias “Jun,” 42, was arrested in the operation.
According to a police report, the shootout occurred along Nido Street in the barangay at around 11:40 p.m. Monday.
Police said Alejos was included in their high-value drug personality list and was the primary target of the buy-bust operation.
The suspect’s companions, identified by aliases Nalos and Asera, along with another suspect using various aliases including Geston, Keith, Lendy, and Baldos Andrada, escaped during the incident and are being pursued by a tracking team from the Dasmariñas police.
Before the shootout, Martinez, along with a confidential informant and other RDEU-4A operatives, went to the house of suspects alias “Andrada” and alias “Asera” to conduct the buy-bust operation at the suspects’ hideout in Barangay San Esteban.
An RDEU-4A officer acted as poseur-buyer and purchased a sachet of suspected shabu from Alejos using ₱1,000 in marked bills.
One of the four suspects grew suspicious, prompting Andrada to draw a firearm and shoot the officer at close range, killing him instantly, police said.
Three suspects caught in the act during a pot session at the location managed to escape, while Alejos was arrested.
Seven plastic sachets of suspected shabu, whose value has yet to be determined, were recovered from the encounter site.
