MANILA, Philippines — The Partido Demokratiko Pilipino warned Saturday that any government official who votes in favor of the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte will be barred from seeking the party’s support in future elections.
In a statement issued from Doña Elena Tower in Sta. Mesa, Manila, the PDP strongly opposed the impeachment complaint against Duterte, calling it a politically motivated move tied to the 2028 elections rather than a genuine effort to seek accountability.
The party said the impeachment push amounted to what it described as “political elimination” and argued that pressing national concerns — including high commodity prices and corruption — were being overshadowed by the proceedings.
PDP said officials who vote to impeach Duterte would not be allowed to join the party and would not be fielded as candidates under its banner in upcoming elections. The party added that it was prepared to field and support opposing candidates against any official who votes in favor of impeachment in their respective districts.
The party maintained that the warnings did not constitute intimidation but were instead a matter of “political accountability.”
PDP also reaffirmed its commitment to constitutional order and cited the more than 32 million Filipinos who voted for Duterte in the last elections as the basis for the party’s defense of the vice president.
The House of Representatives is expected to vote on whether to transmit the impeachment complaint to the Senate on Monday, May 11. — PDP
