The Philippine National Police (PNP) activated emergency measures on Monday as Taal Volcano’s Alert Level 1 status and ongoing emission of volcanic smog or vog prompted the suspension of classes in 40 cities and municipalities in Cavite, Laguna, and Batangas provinces.

Regional Director PBGen Paul Kenneth T Lucas of the Police Regional Office CALABARZON ordered the deployment of the Reactionary Standby Support Force (RSSF), preparation of vehicles and logistical equipment, and the readiness of evacuation centers in case of urgent need.

The Taal Volcano has been emitting 3,355 tons of sulfur dioxide, creating a 2,400-meter-high plume of volcanic smog or vog that is spreading towards the northwestern part of Taal Volcano Island.

“We advise residents in the affected areas to take necessary safety precautions, including wearing face masks and drinking plenty of water to avoid the adverse effects of volcanic smog or vog on our health,” Lucas said.

The PNP CALABARZON assured the public that they are ready to assist as needed. “In times of danger, our police force is ready to help and provide protection to everyone,” Lucas added.

The PNP CALABARZON is continuously posting updates and distributing information flyers on social media to provide updates on the adverse effects and prevention measures for volcanic smog or vog.

The situation is being closely monitored, with the PNP working closely with local government units to ensure an effective response to the volcanic eruption.
