DASMARIÑAS CITY, Cavite — An 18-year-old man died after being swept away by strong river currents while rescuing a younger boy from drowning in Cavite province, police said.
The victim, identified only by the alias Adrian, a resident of Greensinte in Barangay Sampaloc II, Dasmariñas City, was pulled from the Malinta River more than 20 hours after he went missing, authorities said.
Police said the incident occurred around midday on Sept. 22, when Adrian was swimming in the river with a minor identified as Jerome and several other young people. The current suddenly intensified, forcing the group to scramble toward the riverbank.
Adrian and Jerome were climbing out together when both slipped and fell back into the water, police said. Adrian managed to push the boy to safety but was unable to save himself before being swept away by the current.
Barangay officials and Dasmariñas rescue teams launched a search and rescue operation immediately after the incident. The victim’s body was recovered more than 20 hours later.
