IMUS CITY, Cavite — Government officials gathered Wednesday at the Dambana ng Pambansang Watawat Heritage Park in Barangay Alapan 2-B to commemorate the 128th anniversary of the Battle of Alapan and the first unfurling of the Philippine flag.

The ceremony featured the raising of an oversized national flag and the laying of wreaths in honor of the Filipino revolutionary heroes who fought in the battle.

Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla, Senator JV Ejercito, Cavite Governor Francisco Gabriel Remulla, National Historical Commission of the Philippines Chair Regalado Trota Jose Jr., Cavite Provincial Police Director Col. Ariel Red, Imus City Mayor Alex Advincula, Congressman Adrian Jay Advincula, Vice Mayor Homer Saquilayan, and members of the city council and provincial board attended the rites.

The NHCP said the commemoration also marks the start of National Flag Days and serves as a prelude to the celebration of Independence Day on June 12.

On May 28, 1898, Filipino revolutionary forces under Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo defeated Spanish troops in Alapan, Imus. Following the victory, Aguinaldo raised for the first time the Philippine flag sewn by Marcela Mariño de Agoncillo in Hong Kong.
