CAVITE CITY — Devotees on Sunday commemorated the 42nd anniversary of the disappearance of the sacred image of the Virgen de la Soledad de Porta Vaga, recalling a 1984 episode that shook the faith community of Cavite City and has since become a defining chapter in the shrine’s history.

The venerated image went missing from its altar on March 16, 1984, plunging the community into grief and setting off months of searching by devotees and church workers who refused to give up hope.

The Virgen de la Soledad de Porta Vaga has long been regarded as a central symbol of faith and identity among Caviteños. Her image, housed at the Church of San Roque, had for generations served as a focal point for prayer and veneration before its sudden disappearance was discovered inside the church.

News of the loss spread rapidly through the community. In the months that followed, devotees and church caretakers mounted an extensive search for the missing image.

Their prayers were answered on Aug. 15, 1984, when the image was recovered with the help of Antonio Nazareno. While the retrieval was cause for widespread rejoicing, it was found that the image’s golden ornaments and precious jewels had been stripped away.

For the faithful, the physical return of the image outweighed the loss of its adornments. On Aug. 19, 1984, the image was formally returned to San Roque Church in a ceremony marked by the ringing of church bells and tearful prayers from devotees who gathered to welcome back their patroness.

After a period of restoration and preparation, the image was solemnly reinstalled on its altar on Sept. 15, 1985 — an occasion that devotees regard as a second beginning, signaling not just the image’s return but the renewal of the community’s devotion.

Forty-two years on, the episode remains vivid in the memory of the faithful. For many devotees, the story of the image’s disappearance and recovery stands as a testament to the enduring strength of faith in the face of loss.
