INDANG, Cavite — Police are investigating a man who was captured on video throwing a pregnant cat off a bridge, an act that local animal welfare advocates say violates the country’s Animal Welfare Act.

The incident occurred Feb. 17, 2026 along East West Road in Barangay Kayquit 2.

Authorities identified the suspect, who voluntarily surrendered to police, according to the Indang Municipal Police Station.

In a sworn statement, the man claimed he found the white cat already hit by a vehicle and threw it off the bridge believing it was dead.

However, a video of the incident, which has circulated widely online, shows the man picking up the cat before throwing it from the structure. The viral footage prompted a complaint from an animal welfare group, sparking the police investigation.

Trisha Lim, president of Humane Philippines, said the group plans to file charges against the suspect for violating Republic Act 8485, or the Animal Welfare Act of 1998.

Lim said the group deployed a rescue team to Indang following reports the cat may have survived the fall. Despite a search assisted by village officials, the animal — which Lim confirmed was pregnant — has not been found.

The group, with the support of the municipal mayor, is scheduled to formally file a complaint in court on Monday, Feb. 23.

Police reminded the public that such acts of cruelty are not tolerated and said the investigation is ongoing to determine the suspect’s full liability.
