The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Sunday ordered local governments in areas expected to be hit by Typhoon Nika to strictly enforce forced evacuations.
In a memorandum, DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla directed governors, mayors, and regional directors in Luzon to strictly implement evacuation protocols in areas at high risk of flooding, landslides, storm surges, and other disasters.
According to the order, Typhoon Nika is expected to bring heavy rains that may raise water levels in major dams, possibly resulting in water discharge that could affect communities.
The secretary also ordered the Philippine National Police and the Bureau of Fire Protection to support local governments in carrying out forced evacuations and maintaining security at evacuation centers.
Remulla further instructed local officials to coordinate with Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (RDRRMC) and the Department of Social Welfare and Development to ensure adequate relief supplies for affected residents.
The secretary said that local governments should prioritize the safety of vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities.
The order comes as Typhoon Nika is expected to make landfall in the Philippines, bringing with it strong winds and heavy rains that could cause widespread damage and disruption.
