Volcanic Smog May Last Up to 5 Years: Experts

VOLCANIC SMOG FROM TAAL VOLCANO MAY PERSIST FOR UP TO 5 YEARS, EXPERT SAYS

Tagaytay, Cavite: The sulfur dioxide emissions from Taal Volcano, which have been causing volcanic smog in Cavite province, may continue for up to five years, according to Maria Antonia Bornas, chief science research specialist at the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Bornas said the emissions could persist for an extended period, citing a similar volcanic eruption in Japan that took five years to dissipate.

Volcanic smog poses threat to human health.

“If we compare it to a similar volcano in Japan, it took five years for the sulfur dioxide to disappear,” she said.

“So, if it started in 2021, with a one-year delay after the eruption, it may last until 2026.”
