Taal Volcano Alert Level Raised to 1, Indicating Unrest

Tagaytay, Cavite — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology raised the alert level for Taal Volcano to Alert Level 1 on Monday, indicating a state of low-level unrest.

The institute reported increased activity over the past 24 hours, including sulfur dioxide emissions measuring 3,355 metric tons per day and a noticeable volcanic plume rising 2,400 meters.

While no volcanic earthquakes were recorded, scientists observed ground deformation suggesting a slight inflation of the Taal Caldera.

The main crater lake showed elevated temperatures of 72.7°C and increased acidity with a pH of 0.20, based on measurements from February 20, 2024.

Authorities have prohibited entry to Taal Volcano Island and areas near the Main Crater and fissures. They also advised against conducting flights close to the volcano.

The public is warned to remain vigilant for potential steam-driven or phreatic explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall, and lethal accumulations of volcanic gas.

Taal Volcano, located in Batangas province, is one of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines. The last major eruption occurred in January 2020, forcing tens of thousands to evacuate.
