The Department of Education (DepEd) has issued a memorandum suspending classes in Region IV-A and the National Capital Region due to volcanic smog from the recent eruption of Taal Volcano.
According to the memorandum dated August 19, 2024, the suspension comes in response to the release of volcanic smog (vog) over the past 24 hours.
Schools in affected areas are authorized to suspend classes in the absence of official announcements from local government units.
To ensure learning continuity, DepEd has instructed schools to employ alternative delivery methods such as modular or online learning.
The decision to lift the suspension will depend on safety assessments for students and teachers returning to school.
The memorandum, signed by Education Secretary Sonny M. Angara, also outlines several key points:
- Schools must report any casualties, displacements, injuries, or other incidents involving students and teachers to their Regional Office.
- The Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Service (DRRMS) has activated its Rapid Assessment of Damages Report (RADAR) for this hazard.
- School officials and staff are advised to stay updated through announcements from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
DepEd said it hopes for government’s quick response to ensure the safety of students and educational staff in light of the volcanic activity.
The situation remains fluid, and further updates are expected as conditions evolve.
