Two men have died after being struck by lightning while cycling in General Trias City, Cavite province.
The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon during heavy rainfall in Barangay Tapia, according to a statement from the Region 4A Police.
Eyewitnesses reported that the cyclists were caught in a sudden thunderstorm while riding their bicycles.
Emergency services were called to the scene and rushed the victims to a nearby hospital, but both men were pronounced dead on arrival.
Medical examiners noted that the cyclists had suffered severe burns across their bodies, consistent with injuries typically seen in lightning strike victims.
Local authorities have not yet released the identities of the deceased, pending notification of their families.
The Philippines’ weather bureau, PAGASA, had issued warnings about thunderstorms in the region earlier that day. Safety experts advise seeking shelter immediately during electrical storms and avoiding open areas or elevated positions.
The local government of General Trias City has urged residents to remain vigilant and prioritise safety during inclement weather.
