PCG to Dismiss and Demote Personnel Involved in Naic Shooting Incident

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has recommended the dismissal and demotion of two of its personnel who were involved in a shooting incident in Naic, Cavite last February 18.

PCG Spokesperson Adm. Armand Balilo said that the agency does not tolerate the actions of the two seamen who opened fire in Barangay Latoria while they were on duty and under the influence of alcohol.

According to Balilo, the PCG conducted its own investigation and coordinated with the Philippine National Police (PNP) to determine the appropriate sanctions for the erring personnel.

The shooting incident occurred around 2 a.m. when the two PCG personnel arrived on a motorcycle in the barangay. One of them, who was armed with a PCG-issued assault rifle and wearing a battle dress uniform, went to his live-in partner who was on a hill. The couple had an argument that led to the man firing 18 shots. No one was hit or injured by the bullets.

The motive for the shooting was believed to be jealousy, as the man suspected his partner of having an affair with another man.

The two PCG personnel were arrested by the police in a follow-up operation. They are facing criminal charges of illegal discharge of firearms and administrative charges of grave misconduct and conduct unbecoming of a public officer.

Balilo said that the PCG will not tolerate any form of violence or abuse by its personnel, especially against women and children. He also urged the public to report any irregularities or misbehavior by PCG members to the agency’s hotline or social media accounts.
