Three young Filipino inventors have developed a pair of shoes capable of generating electricity to charge a cellphone, turning an everyday item into a source of renewable energy.

Miguel Ortega, Otto Uylangco and Creo Baylon, students at the Philippine Science High School, spent seven months building the invention, which uses what they call a piezoelectric magnetic setup — a mechanism that captures pressure and vibration from footsteps and converts it into electrical energy.

According to the students, each step generates about 10 milliwatts of electricity, which their prototype channels to charge a cellphone, demonstrating how the simple act of walking could be harnessed as a power source.

The invention was entered into Project Tuklas, where it competed against projects from other schools across Metro Manila.

The students said they plan to improve the design further, including developing a more efficient energy storage system that could eventually power other small electronic devices in addition to cellphones.
