SILANG, Cavite — A Philippine industry centered on enoki mushroom production is emerging in this town, with potential to create jobs, expand agricultural opportunities and lower food prices for consumers.
The Department of Agriculture is supporting an investment by Filipino-owned Basic Necessity Inc. in a highly automated enoki mushroom production facility in Silang.
The investment has already affected prices. Locally produced enoki mushrooms, previously priced at around P80 per 200-gram pack, are now sold for P29.75 in roughly 1,700 DALI stores nationwide.
The production process also makes use of agricultural by-products, including corn cobs, rice hulls, sawdust, rice bran and sugarcane bagasse — materials once considered agricultural waste.
The facility is expected to directly employ about 50 workers, while farmers supplying biomass and other raw materials could also benefit.
The Department of Agriculture said the enterprise is not limited to the domestic market. Once local demand is met, Philippine-grown enoki mushrooms could potentially be exported to markets such as Singapore and the Middle East, the department said.
