JULES ALPE, ANOTHER FILIPINO FIGURE SKATER FROM CAVITE, MAKES MARK IN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION
BACOOR, Cavite — Michael Christian Martinez was the first Southeast Asian figure skater to qualify for the Winter Olympics, but Cavite claims its own figure skating standout in Jules Vince Alpe of Molino, Bacoor.
Alpe began figure skating at a young age and won the Junior Men’s Division title at the 2014 Philippine National Figure Skating Championships.
He later represented the Philippines at the 2017 Asian Winter Games in Sapporo, Japan, and won the 2016-2017 Southeast Asian Figure Skating Challenge in Bangkok.
Alpe trained alongside Martinez whenever the Olympian was in the country, and both skaters were part of the Philippine national figure skating team in several international competitions.
Cavite officials and residents have cited Alpe’s achievements as proof that Filipino athletes, including those from tropical provinces like Cavite, can compete in winter sports at the international level.
