CAVITE — A group representing journalists in Cavite province has condemned alleged harassment and intimidation by police officers against two photojournalists covering a protest outside the Philippine International Convention Center and Aliw Theater in Pasay City on July 22.
In a statement, Cavite Press Corps President Gene Adsuara said any form of intimidation against journalists carrying out their duties is unacceptable.
Photojournalists Rene Dilan and Bulilit Marquez were allegedly harassed and intimidated by a group of police officers while photographing the demonstration, according to the group.
The Cavite Press Corps said the incident violated the journalists’ rights and posed a threat to press freedom and the public’s right to accurate and timely information.
The group called on the Philippine National Police to conduct an immediate, fair and transparent investigation to identify and hold accountable those involved.
The Cavite Press Corps stressed that law enforcers are obligated to respect the constitutional rights guaranteed to all journalists, particularly when covering public assemblies and protests.
The group also expressed solidarity with Dilan and Marquez, as well as with all media workers who continue to serve the public despite the risks they face in performing their duties.
The Cavite Press Corps reiterated its commitment to defending press freedom and the right of every journalist to report freely, without intimidation, interference or any form of coercion.
