TERNATE, Cavite — A 2-year-old boy drowned in a river in Sitio Ligas, Barangay Sapang 1, on Monday, March 16, 2026 after his mother found him floating in the water nearly an hour after he went missing, police said.
The victim, identified only by his nickname “Jhyroz,” lived near the river with his family.
The Ternate Municipal Police Station said the boy’s mother noticed him missing at around 5 p.m. and searched the area around their home and along the riverbank but could not find him. She returned to the river at around 6 p.m. and spotted the child floating in the water.
She jumped in and pulled him out, but he was already unresponsive. A neighbor helped rush the child to Cavite Municipal Hospital in Maragondon, where attending physician Dr. Rosemarie Tabalanza declared him dead on arrival at approximately 6:45 p.m.
Authorities said the investigation is ongoing.
Police urged parents and guardians to keep close watch over young children, especially in areas near rivers and other bodies of water.
