BACOOR CITY, Cavite — Police have arrested a man facing charges of large-scale illegal recruitment, transporting him from Davao to Bacoor City following the execution of a standing arrest warrant.
The suspect, identified only by his alias “Rene” and his surname Vergafria, 43, is a resident of Sitio San Roque, Surallah, South Cotabato. He faces charges under Republic Act 8042, or the Migrant Workers and Overseas Filipinos Act, for large-scale illegal recruitment — an offense classified as economic sabotage under Philippine law and punishable by life imprisonment and heavy fines.
Operatives from the Warrant Section of the Bacoor Component City Police Station traveled to Davao International Airport on the afternoon of March 16 to take custody of the suspect, who was turned over by personnel of the Surallah Municipal Police Station.
The arrest warrant was issued on Sept. 22, 2025, by Regional Trial Court Branch 113 in Bacoor City, under Presiding Judge Maricar S. A. Prudon-Sison. No bail was recommended for the offense.
Police said the operation was conducted in accordance with Philippine National Police (PNP) protocols.
Authorities reiterated their warning to the public to remain vigilant against illegal recruiters, urging job seekers to verify the legitimacy of recruiters and job offers through the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) before committing to any overseas employment arrangement.
