QUEZON CITY, Philippines – Former Sen. Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. was transferred Tuesday to the newly constructed Quezon City Jail Male Dormitory in Payatas, becoming the facility’s first prominent inmate.

Revilla, whose plunder case stemming from the “pork barrel” scandal remains pending before the Sandiganbayan anti-graft court, was moved to decongest the former Quezon City Jail in Kamuning.

The new jail, managed by the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, sits on a 2.4-hectare site within the Payatas area, known for being Metro Manila’s primary landfill.

Built to house between 5,000 and 6,600 persons deprived of liberty, the complex features three five-story buildings containing a total of 440 cells.

Each cell measures approximately 47 square meters and is designed to hold 10 to 20 inmates. Standard furnishings include bunk beds, a bathroom area and two electric fans.

BJMP officials said the facility anticipates receiving other high-profile detainees in the coming weeks. These may include former Sens. Jinggoy Estrada and Juan Ponce Enrile, as well as current Sen. Joel Villanueva, all of whom face related charges.

Former Speaker Martin Romualdez and several officials from the Department of Public Works and Highways, also implicated in corruption cases, are among those who could be transferred.

The transfer of Revilla marks the operational launch of a jail long planned to address severe overcrowding in the capital region’s detention centers.
