Cavite City opens new public university with free tuition

CAVITE CITY — Cavite City has inaugurated its newest public higher education institution, Cavite City University, which officials say will provide free tuition and modern facilities to local students.

The school, which formally opened this month, features 18 classrooms and offices, a medical laboratory, a computer laboratory, a library, a nursing skills lab and an auditorium.

All classrooms are fully air-conditioned and equipped with 65-inch smart televisions for instruction.

Mayor Denver Chua, who spearheaded the project, said the university was funded through local taxes and is intended to make higher education more accessible to Caviteños. “There should no longer be a reason for any Caviteño not to pursue college,” he said.

Cavite City University is part of a national effort to expand access to public higher education.

Under Republic Act 10931, also known as the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act signed in 2017, tuition and other fees are waived in state universities and colleges across the country.

Local officials said the university is expected to serve hundreds of incoming students from Cavite City and nearby towns in the coming academic year.
