The Philippine government will build a new 3-billion-peso rail station in Cavite province as part of an extension project aimed at connecting the capital Manila with the fast-growing commercial district south of the city.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon announced Monday the addition of Talaba Station to the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) Cavite Extension, to be located in Bacoor city’s Barangay Talaba.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) will finance the project through its own budget rather than passing costs to operator Light Rail Manila Corp. (LRMC), Dizon said.

The new station will sit between the proposed Zapote and Niog stations in the third segment of the extension project, which aims to provide direct rail connectivity between Metro Manila and Cavite province.

Construction timelines show the second phase covering Las Piñas and Zapote stations is scheduled to open in 2028, while LRMC expects to complete the third phase by 2030.

The government is making progress acquiring right-of-way permits for the Las Piñas segment, giving officials confidence in meeting the 2028 deadline, Dizon said.

Engineers have also resolved infrastructure conflicts in the Cavite section that previously threatened to delay construction. A flyover built across the rail line’s path will no longer require realignment through an unspecified engineering solution.

Once the Bacoor extension opens, daily ridership is projected to reach 800,000 passengers, with travel time between Pasay City and Cavite cut to 25 minutes.

The LRT-1 ranks among Metro Manila’s busiest transit systems, owned by the government through the Light Rail Transit Authority and operated by LRMC under concession.

Dizon said the DOTr has requested the Department of Budget and Management include Talaba Station funding in next year’s expenditure program.
