Fruit Trees Take Root in General Tias’s Arbor Day Initiative

GENERAL TRIAS, Cavite — The city of General Trias marked Arbor Day with a tree-planting initiative focused on fruit-bearing species in local subdivisions.

City Agriculturist Nerissa P. Marquez said the program aims to combat climate change and promote food security.

“We are eyeing to plant fruit-bearing trees initially in 33 subdivisions in General Trias,” Marquez told media.

The City Agriculture Office provided vermicast and offers free seedlings upon request. Marquez said the initiative also supports vegetable planting programs in villages to boost health and nutrition.

Species planted include calamansi, rambutan and cashew. Officials highlighted the dual benefits of providing shade and potential income for homeowners.

Mayor Jonjon Ferrer’s representative, Atty. Donna Mae B. Tiongson-Jordan, noted the trees’ role in cooling the environment.

City Agriculturist II Rogel R. Marges urged residents to maintain the newly planted trees.

Arbor Day is observed annually on June 25 throughout the Philippines, as mandated by Presidential Proclamation 643 and Republic Act 10176.

A separate tree-planting event was held at KAIA Homes Phase 3 village in Barangay Pasong Kawayan.
