MANILA, Philippines — Officials, teachers, students and literary advocates gathered Tuesday at Liwasang Balagtas in Pandacan, Manila, to mark the 238th birth anniversary of Francisco “Balagtas” Baltazar, one of the country’s most revered literary figures.

The event honored Baltazar’s contributions to Filipino literature and celebrated the enduring influence of his works on Philippine culture and national consciousness.

The program featured readings of some of his most famous poems, including excerpts from his masterpiece “Florante at Laura,” which remains a cornerstone of Filipino literary heritage. Organizers also staged short plays and Filipino musical performances in recognition of Baltazar’s creative legacy.

Speakers emphasized the importance of his teachings on history, love of country and the value of the Filipino language.

The celebration’s lead organizer said the commemoration aimed “not only to honor the great poet, but to remind the youth and the public of the importance of literature in shaping our identity and cultural values.”

Liwasang Balagtas, a traditional venue for such events, once again served as a symbol of inspiration, reflecting Baltazar’s lasting impact on the Filipino people.

As the program concluded, attendees were urged to continue enriching the national language and culture, and to keep studying and bringing to life Baltazar’s works, which remain guides to national identity.
