Residents of Cavite province are calling on Gov. Francisco Gabriel “Abeng” Remulla to suspend classes as influenza-like illnesses continue to spread across the National Capital Region and neighboring provinces, raising concerns about student and teacher safety.

The appeal, circulated on social media, comes as health officials report increasing cases of influenza-like illness (ILI) in Metro Manila and surrounding areas.

The province of Cavite, located south of the capital region, has seen growing public concern about potential transmission in schools.

“Gov, pakiusap po—maglabas na sana ng class suspension dahil sa patuloy na banta ng influenza-like illness,” residents wrote in the social media post, which translates to a plea for class suspensions due to the continuing threat of influenza-like illness.

Under Philippine law, provincial governors have the authority to suspend classes in their jurisdiction due to public health emergencies, natural disasters, or other threats to public safety.

Local government executives can issue suspension orders for public and private schools within their territorial boundaries.

The Department of Health has reported elevated levels of ILI cases in Metro Manila in recent weeks, though specific provincial data for Cavite was not immediately available.

Influenza-like illness typically presents with sudden onset of fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, and fatigue.

ILI differs from common colds in its severity and rapid onset.

The illness spreads through respiratory droplets when infected individuals cough, sneeze, or talk, making crowded environments like schools particularly vulnerable to transmission.

Children and elderly individuals face higher risks of complications.

Health experts recommend frequent handwashing, avoiding close contact with sick individuals, and staying home when symptomatic to prevent spread.

Vaccination remains the most effective preventive measure against influenza.

The governor’s office has not yet issued a public response to the residents’ appeal.
